Darwin is a hub of activity with plenty of things to do for all ages. But it’s not just about the paid activities. There is so much to do and see that doesn’t cost a cent. And who doesn’t love doing something for nothing?
We have compiled our top list of FREE things to do while in Darwin.
- Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory
If you’re anything like us, we were not enthused about going to the Museum as I thought it was going to be an absolute drag. Boy was I wrong!
Don’t miss out on the 18-foot saltwater crocodile called Sweetheart & the exhibition on Cyclone Tracy which absolutely took my breath away with just how much devastation it caused.
- Mindil Beach Markets
Thursdays and Sundays during May-October, 4-9 pm.
Grab something that takes your fancy for dinner from the many selections available. (My personal favourite was the calamari). Dinner was topped off with a pretty amazing sunset. For me though, it was the massage that took the cake. That was absolute heaven.
- Darwin Waterfront & Stokes Hill Wharf
The Darwin Waterfront is smack bang in the middle of Darwin’s CBD walking distance from the Smith street mall and the esplanade. Make sure you check out Stokes Hill Wharf for some restaurants & the Ferris wheel with cracker views (the sunset 🌅 is amazing).
- Lenyar Recreation Park
Trust me when I say this. Do not miss these slides!!
- East Point Reserve
We spent the afternoon beachcombing in the rockpools. What better way to learn about the natural habitats of sealife.
- Cullen Bay Fish Feeding
Located at Cullen Bay Marina opposite the big steel crocodile statue. Everyday between 9 am and 4 pm
($1 per bag of food if you wish to do the feeding yourself)
- Parliament House & Northern Territory Libary at Parliament House. Anyone who knows us would know we don’t belong in a Library because we are way too loud! But this was a different kind of library and while I accept we were probably still too loud, the exhibits within the library were really educational & I learnt things I never knew about the Stolen Generation. The stories had me captivated & I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to have a jig to some Yothu Yindi in the music section.
- Casuarina Coastal Reserve
Take a picnic rug, go for a stroll you’ll be surprised what you find!
- George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens
A nature reserve on 42 hectares of native & tropical flora including a fabulous cafe onsite.
- Adelaide River War Cemetery
The Cemetery contains 435 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
We used opportunities like this, for educational days for our daughter without her even knowing she was taking a history lesson! It’s amazing when you don’t try to make it a lesson how much they actually soak up. I even learnt some things I didn’t know.
